Keeping Apple Tree Healthy

Asked August 19, 2013, 3:48 PM EDT

Our small Honeycrisp apple tree is just loaded with fruit; we have removed about 150 small green apples, but the branches are still bent under the load. What percent of apples should be removed to keep an apple tree healthy? We have never had this many apples on this tree before and it is about 9-10 years old. Thank you.

It's a little late to be removing any more apples now. If you wanted to thin apples it should be done around the time of the 'June drop', which is the time the apple tree naturally sheds excess apples. Enjoy your crop this year as next year you will have few to none. Honeycrisp bears heavily every other year.
