i am trying to find out what this is that has become a pest in the landing of the steps leading to my basement. there are no trees over hanging the steps and no type of garden there either. every day i sweep a hundred or more away from the area, and next morning there are back again. the pics are enlarged to see better. the pest its self is maybe about an inch long, and about as thick as a paper clip.

The creatures in your photo are millipedes. They are harmless, but can be a nuisance when they come into the basement. They feed on decaying organic matter and are commonly found in mulch adjacent to the house. From there they will occasionally migrate through a small opening near a door or window to either find shelter from the elements or from predators. As long as they are outside, they are not a problem. Your technique of sweeping them away is appropriate. You can also control them by simply stepping on them when you see them. Make sure your doors and windows are sealed tightly. You could also sprinkle diatomaceous earth (available at most garden centers) around the doors and window frames to keep them out of the house.
