Tree health

Asked July 27, 2013, 9:36 PM EDT

I have a large for tree on my property and the top has died out. It is near our house and could hit it if the entire tree fell. Should I consider havin it removed? We like the tree and it is good wildlife habitat so would like to keep it if possible. Thanks

You are right, trees with dead tops do make great wildlife habitat. They are also more prone to breakage at or above the point where the top died out. It basically boils down to your tolerance for risk. For a hazard tree assessment, you should get a consultation from a certified arborist. You can find a directory on the website of the Pacific Northwest chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture:
