The only really effective tick repellants I am aware of are DEET and products containing permethrin. Be sure to follow the directions on the label. Other options include altering our behaviors in order to be better at detecting them or avoiding them.

  • when hiking on trails, try to stay in the center (most cleared spot) to avoid brushing up against high weeds and brush (areas ticks may be waiting to attach themselves to hosts)
  • it is easier to see ticks when wearing lighter colored clothes
  • tuck pants legs into socks, tuck in shirt, wear long-sleeved shirt. This provides a barrier for ticks to try and get past.
  • After the outdoor activity, change clothes, shower, towel dry and search body for ticks. Wash clothes worn during the activity soon afterwards.
  • Inspect pets for ticks
Note: mention of specific products does not endorse use of a particular product over another and omitting products does not criticize a product's efficacy.
