The best defense against invasive lawn weeds is a good lawn maintenance program. Water leaches nutrients from sandy soils so adding organic material to your lawn can help with nutrient retention. Sand spurs and their ilk occur in nitrogen depleted soils so I suggest that have your soil tested. You can get a soil test kit at
