I'm a backyard gardener. As age has crept up on me I have reduced the size of my vegetable garden although packaged seed still come in the same quantities. Can I preserve the unused portion of seed purchased this year for next year's planting? If so, how?

You certainly can save commercially purchased seed for at least one year, sometimes more. The following publication may be helpful:
