safety of gravel paths around raised bed vegetable garden

Asked July 2, 2013, 4:34 PM EDT

Is it safe to use a gravel base under granite pea gravel on paths surrounding raised bed vegetable gardens. Should I be concerned about lime leaching into the soil from the gravel. I would like to keep the garden as organic as possible. Is using barrier cloth preferred to gravel in these situations

Either gravel or barrier cloth would work. I would think gravel would be more "organic" than the barrier cloth. How much the gravel would affect the pH depends on the parent material of the gravel. Granite is pretty inert so that is not a concern. Most Michigan soils will eventually need a lime application so your other gravel may act as a slow release lime source so it shouldn't be a concern.
