Starting grape cuttings in CO

Asked June 28, 2013, 4:46 PM EDT

Hi,
We have some grape cuttings being grown/tested in quarantine at UC Davis, and expect them to be available this November.

Thus, can you refer me to someone who can instruct me in how to establish a small 24 plant vineyard here in Loveland CO using the cuttings?

Thank you,

Hello,

Unfortunately, there isn't an Extension person in Larimer County who has this expertise. But CSU has some great resources for you to consider.

One is the Grape Grower's Guide: http://www.ext.colostate.edu/pubs/garden/550a.pdf

This comprehensive document covers pretty much all aspects of growing grapes in Colorado. It would have information on establishment. The Orchard Mesa Research Experiment Station's website would also have information: http://www.colostate.edu/programs/wcrc/pubs/information/orchardmesa.htm

In addition, the University of Minnesota has a very comprehensive website: http://www.grapes.umn.edu/ While their climate is slightly different, the aspects of cold hardiness would be helpful. The only thing is they get more precipitation than we do, and have much higher humidity.

Another resource to consider are some of the local wine growers. Blue Mountain Vineyard in Berthoud has produced wine and grown grapes for many years: http://www.coloradobluemountain.com/
