Emerald Green Arborvitae Dying?

Asked June 24, 2013, 9:59 PM EDT

Hi,
I planted a few 4ft Emerald Green Arborvitae last fall. I have noticed that they are all brown on the inside, while green on the outside. Is this normal, or are they in distress?

Thanks-

An Arborvitae will typically shed interior needles so interior browning is not uncommon, especially in the fall. These interior needles will eventually drop off. Since these are newly planted, I would monitor them. If you see browning on the outside needles or at the bottom, this may be an indication of other problems. During extended periods with low/no rain, you may want to lay a hose at the base and run it slowly for good absorption to the root ball. Move the hose periodically around the base.
