How long can you safely keep meat in a freezer? My in-laws have beef in their freezer that is more than five years old and I don't think they should be using it. Thanks!

As long as the meat in the freezer was not temperature abused it is still safe to use. This means that the meat did not reach a temperature of over 40 degrees F at any time during the freezing process. The real issue is the quality of the meat. Meat loses moisture as it stays in the freezer and the product quality deteriorates. I would not recommend keeping meat over 1 year for best use of the product.
