xeriscape shade plants

Asked June 17, 2013, 7:36 PM EDT

Hi there,

I have a very shady back yard that is without irrigation and I am sometimes gone for months at a time. I'd really like to avoid putting down rock. Any suggestions for something that does well without water, in the shade?

Thanks very much for your advice!

Theres a few options for you, but keep in mind ALL of these will need watering to become established. Once established, watering frequency and amount can be reduced.
Allegheny Viburnum
Darts Duke Viburnum
Ptelea trifoliata (Hoptree)
Forestiera neomexicana (New Mexico privet)

Perennials, ground covers
Desert Four O' Clock (may not bloom heavily in shade)
Winecups or Poppy Mallow (may not bloom as heavily in shade)
Vinca minor (Periwinkle)
Sweet Woodruff
Mahonia repens (Creeping Grapeholly)
Corsican violet (reseeds readily)
Wintercreeper Euonymus
Geranium sanguineum (Bloody cranesbill)
