Yellowing of flowering crabapple

Asked June 11, 2013, 9:05 PM EDT

Why is our flowering crabapple tree leaves turning yellow and dropping? It is only the middle of June. Can it be saved or does it need to be cut down?

Without seeing pictures it is hard to diagnosis what might be the causes. We have had excessive cool wet weather this spring and it is possible that your crabapple is suffering from Apple Scab which is a fungal disease that causes black spots and yellowing of leaves around this time if the leaves are infected and can result in leaf drop. If you would like, please send me a picture at khoule@illinois.edu or further diagnosis or take in leaf samples to your local Extension office.
