edible grape leaves

Asked June 1, 2013, 7:48 PM EDT

I have 3 betas and 3 concord seedless grape vines - are the leaves okay to eat? If so, what is the nutritional value? I would like to make dolmathes and smoothies with them. Thank you!

According to CSU enology expert Steve Menke, the leaves are fine to use for dolmathes. Be sure to first wash and scrub them and cook them. People in the midwest and east use concord leaves for dolmathes. Use for smoothies is a bit more questionable. The leaves should definitely be washed and scrubbed well if used raw, and I would think too high a percentage might bother some stomachs. Regarding nutritional content, raw grape leaves are listed on the USDA Nutrient Database at: http://ndb.nal.usda.gov/ndb/foods/show/3564?fg=&man=&lfacet=&format=&count=&max=25&offset=&sort=&qlookup=grape+leaves Hope this helps.
