Watering plants before vacation

Asked June 1, 2013, 12:24 PM EDT

Will be away for a week in mid summer. I am thinking of moving the pots and planters to the shade on covered porch and soaking well before I leave.
Do you have any other suggestions?
Is it better to water in the early morning or evening. I have soaker hoses just under surface.
Thank You, Jeanne

In general, it is better to water in the morning. As far as vacation, the most reliable way to make sure your potted plants are watered is to solicit the help of a friend or neighbor to check on them. There are products on the market such as aqua globes, drip irirgation systems and watering spikes that allow you to insert a plastic bottle of water into the container. Depending on the heat and rain, or lack of, these products may not be effective for the entire week. LW
