I have moss growing in my lawn. Why us it growing there and how can I prevent it and get rid of it?

Moss grows in lawns for a number of reasons such as acidic pH, too much shade, low soil fertility, poor drainage, and compacted soil. These conditions are unfavorable for grass so therefore the grass thins out and the moss moves in.
