What the heck is this??

Asked May 24, 2013, 11:19 AM EDT

Good morning! We have this monster of a plant that popped up recently and we cannot find anyone who knows what it is. I say it is a big weed, my husband begs to differ. We would just like to know what the heck it is and if we need to get rid of it! Thank you so much for your help!

My guess would be some species of Phytolacca (probably P. americana), commonly known as pokeweed or pokeberry. The flower raceme will become pinkish to purple fruits. It is considered to be a poisonous plant (NOT TO BE EATEN).
You can get lots more info by doing an internet search for pokeweed OR visit this page on Texas Native Plants (Univ. of TX site). http://www.wildflower.org/plants/result.php?id_plant=PHAM4
