Source of Milkweed Seeds for Monarchs

Asked May 23, 2013, 3:03 PM EDT

I was going to convert one of my flower beds to milkweed for Monarchs - what is the best native species for mid-Atlantic? I was going to buy seed online, but please let me know if you know of any place I can get for free?

Howard County Maryland

There are two milkweeds listed in the 'Native Plants for Wildlife Habitat and Conservation Landscaping, Chespapeake Bay Watershed'. They are Asclepias incarnata (swamp milkweed) and Asclepias syriaca, known as common milkweed.
We are not aware of sources of free seed, but you might check with nature centers, or those associated with pages such as this: http://www.maeoe.org/habitat/projects/butterfly_habitats.php
