Small, Green Bugs in Container Garden

My wife and I have a small container garden, and over the last few weeks, we've noticed lots of small, light-green bugs (I think they are aphids) on our tomatoes and eggplants. Are these harmless little critters, or do we need to find something to control them? Thanks for your help.

Aphids certainly can be a pest of tomatoes and eggplants grown in containers. They are not harmless as they can cause curling or distortion of leaves. For pictures and information about control, see the following information:
