Why are some of my asparagus plants spears very thin and others very thick? They've been more consistent in the past.(Plants are 5 years old.)

Asparagus spears should start off thick, then get thinner as root energy is used up. After they are pencil thickness you should not harvest them any more and let the ferns grow up so they can harvest energy for next year's crop. There is a great fact sheet here on growing asparagus.
