Hawthorn tree blossoms changing color

Asked May 20, 2013, 7:42 PM EDT

HI, My neighbor's Hawthorn tree's blossoms usually bloom in pink. This year the buds and blossoms are white. Can this color change be due to stress due to our colder and wetter spring weather? Or could it be age? Is a hawthorn prone to strain/genus change? Is it possible to return to a pink blossom in later years?

Thank you!
(They are elders so I told them I research this for them.)

In our research we found that hawthorn are naturally pink to white, it could be due to the weather, soil condidtion, or whether it has been fertilized that make the color lean to pink one year and white in others. Regards, Kat Master Gardener Desk
