What to add to clay-like soil

Asked May 17, 2013, 10:21 AM EDT

We recently purchased a home and we are basically starting over on the landscaping. What should we add to the clay-like soil on our lot for grass and flower beds?

Thank you,

Jordana,

Congratulations on the new home! You are already starting out on the right foot with your new yard. The best thing that you can do to improve the texture and tilth of your clay soils is to increase the organic content by adding composts or other organic materials. Before doing anything, though, we recommend that you get your soil tested by the CSU lab. They will give you information about your soil and recommendations how to improve the soil for the specific types of landscaping and gardening you intend to do. The El Paso County extension office is located at 305 South Union Blvd in Colorado Springs; call them at (719) 520-7690 to obtain soil test kits and instructions for collecting and submitting your samples.
