The Oat Wilt fungus is a problem for oak species within the red oak family but not the white oak family. Last year was a very stressful year for all plants especially trees. The effect of last year's heat and drought will be seen in many trees this year. Any newly planted tree needs to be watered with about 1 inch of water per week for up to 3 years. If your trees did not receive this watering last year, it is likely that you are seeing the result of this stress this year. It is recommended that you assure that the trees are adequately watered this year and prune out any branches which fail to leaf out. At the end of the season you can decide whether the trees are healthy enough to keep.
