Smoke and Water damage

Asked May 9, 2013, 5:19 PM EDT

I need information on what foods I can safely remove from my home. Also, how do I clean household items such as appliances and wood furniture. My apt burned on Mon and the kitchen and dining area only have smoke and water damage. The bedrooms and bathroom are pretty much destroyed.

I'm so sorry about your ordeal and loss! An online publication that be helpful is at this link: http://www.lsuagcenter.com/en/communications/publications/Publications+Catalog/Disaster+Information/Storm+Recovery+Guide/Storm+Recovery+Guide+for+Homeowners+Natural+Hazards+Series.htm

In a nutshell, canned foods that are not bulging or damaged or melted are OK, but other foods that have been wet should be discarded. Wood furniture is generally restorable; any mold should be cleaned off outdoors, but do not dry wet wood in the sun. Wet upholstery is hard to salvage, and if moldy should be replaced. Appliances could be OK. Unplug, allow to dry , then have them checked by an appliance servicer. Best wishes.
