Amount of N for new garden

Asked May 7, 2013, 6:15 PM EDT

I've broken ground for a new veg. garden. Should I work in N in the soil before I plant vegetables? If so, how much N/ 1,000 sq. ft. should I add?

Hello and thanks for asking your question about applying soil nitrogen. The following link is to an Oregon State University publication called "Grow Your Own." The link will take you directly to the page on fertilizer. http://ir.library.oregonstate.edu/xmlui/bitstream/handle/1957/21092/g-em9027fertilizing.pdf?sequence... For other parts of the publication, visit this website http://ir.library.oregonstate.edu/xmlui/handle/1957/21092 Before you begin, it is worthwhile to invest in a soil test to see how much nitrogen and other nutrients you already have. You can find a list of soil laboratories by searching for Soil Sampling for Home Gardens and Small Acreages (EC 628) referenced on the bottom right side of the page. The website is noted there. Colorado State University has a helpful fact sheet to help you determine the amount of nitrogen you need - http://www.ext.colostate.edu/pubs/garden/07247.html I hope you find this information helpful. Please feel free to ask other questions. Linda
