CAE in goats

Asked April 17, 2013, 9:44 AM EDT

Hello, how long can CAE live outside the body? Yesterday we put two goats down that had the disease/symptoms...how long do we need to wait to put other goats into their barn/pasture? Any specific cleaning methods (bleach, etc) we need to use? Thanks for you time. Doug

CAE is spread by direct social contact among goats. It is bascially in the blood cells and it is through body secretions that it can spread. It does not live very long at all outside of the body.

Many animals test positive and nver show symptoms of the disease. I am not sure if you have bought tested goats or not, that is really the only way to be sure you have CAE negative stock.
