Something Eating my Carrots

Asked April 14, 2013, 2:32 PM EDT

At end of '12 when picking my carrots & beets, something was eating carrots & beets from the bottom up, leaving just a 1/2 mm thick surface of the veggie [empty inside]. No obvious mole or vole hole seen. Question: How to avoid this year? Put chicken wire a foot deep under them? Any danger from veggies absorbing minerals released from the chicken wire? Any other ideas?

insect, mammal or???? First is to try and fiure out what was eating your carrots. Second there is little to no danger with using your wire buried in the soil. I suspect you may not get more than a season or two out of the wire depending how thick of wire you use.
