When does asparagus season start for us? When can we expect our asparagus to being coming up? We have just moved into an old farm that has a nice asparagus crop planted.

Every spring is different, and this spring has decided to be cold while last spring was extremely warm. For Somerset County you may need to wait till the end of April or even into May before the asparagus are ready to emerge from the soil and grow up. Asparagus need to have soil temperatures to be at least 50 before they begin to emerge from the soil. They will continue to emerge and grow as the air temperature rises. When the air temperatures are cool, you will be able to harvest a few spears few days, as the temperatures warm up you will be able to harvest 5-7 spears each day and sometimes twice a day. Established beds can produce asparagus spears for 6-8 weeks, depending on the air temperatures and rainfall. Stop harvesting when ¾ of the spears are grow only 3/8 inch thick.
