Lime or Chicken Liter

Asked April 1, 2013, 11:25 AM EDT

I am trying to decide on wether I should use lime or chicken liter in my pastures this year. I am trying to cut cost and which choice would be more beneficial for me to use, or should I just "bite the bullet" and do both?

Limestone and chicken litter are used for two totally different issues. Limestone is used to adjust an acid soil pH up to an appropriate level to enhance nutrient availability and promote good root development and plant growth. Chicken litter is useful as a source of nutrients (N, P, and K, micronutrients, organic matter, etc.) While the calcium contained in chicken litter can increase soil pH with repeated applications over many years, using chicken litter is not used as a primary acid soil pH adjustment strategy.
