Fig trees in SW Michigan

Asked March 19, 2013, 4:57 PM EDT

Is it possible to grow fig trees in SW Michigan? If so what varieties are best? What steps need to be taken to ensure their survival through our cold winters? How do you care for a fig tree? Where can they be purchased?

I think our winters are too cold and our growing season is too short.Figs require 190 days between frosts and you can expect winter injury at 15 F and tree death at 5 F. You would so need to manage the wasps that are neccessary for pollination as they are not native here
