What kind of house plant is this?

Asked March 13, 2013, 1:56 PM EDT

I rescued this plant about a year ago and need to pot it for obvious root growth reasons.I just wonder what kind of plant it is in order to get the proper soil type and pot size. Right now it is in a vase with only water (which prompted the root growth) and it was cut from a parent plant. The problem is, no one in the office can remember whose plant it originally was or whose plant it was cut from...

I would like to take it home once it has been potted - but I have animals and am afraid if it's poisonous they could get into it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Your plant looks like some type of Schefflera. There are several species of this plant, and I cannot determine the exact species. The following website discusses the care of Schefflera. http://www.clemson.edu/extension/hgic/plants/indoor/foliage/hgic1511.html There is some disagreement as to whether these plants are poisonous. The following two university websites state that the plant is toxic. http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/depts/hort/consumer/poison/Schefsp.htm http://www.ladybug.uconn.edu/hotissues/safeandpoisonoushouseplants.html The next site, also from a university, states that the plant is not toxic. http://www.ext.nodak.edu/extnews/hortiscope/flowers/schfflra.htm I hope this information is helpful.
