Killing cover crop

Asked March 12, 2013, 1:50 AM EDT

Is it necessary to kill cover crop (oats, vetch and peas) before tilling? I've used roundup in the past to kill it several weeks before planting. Thanks

Hi there,

You do need to make sure that you kill the cover crop before planting because otherwise, the cover crop will compete with whatever you plant. To kill it, you can use roundup - but you can also just mow it down (or weed whack) and then leave the trimmings on top of the area that you just mowed. This will kill it enough so that you can till it into your soil.
