I live in The Dalles OR in town. When should I start feeding roses?

Wasco County Oregon

This is an excellent question. We all want to get out and begin our spring pruning and cleaning, but patience is best when it comes to roses especially. If an unexpected hard freeze happens you could lose your prize rose if you prune to early. The best indicator to begin pruning and feeding roses for the coming season in Wasco and neighboring counties is when you see Forsythia blooming in your neighborhood.
A rose pruning clinic will be offered by Master Gardeners in early March to learn more and ask questions. Watch your locally newspaper for more information, or call The Dalles extension office at 541-296-5494 to talk with a master gardener.
