self heal prunella vulgaris

Asked February 7, 2013, 2:12 PM EST

I was considering planting prunella vulgaris on my front boulevard and noticed it looks just like the plant I keep on pulling out of my grass. Is this plant pretty invasive and self sowing? I imagined it would look good with the creeping oregon grape and salal on the boulevard. Would that work?

Thank you for your question to Ask the Expert.

Prunella is definitely an agresive weed. I would not plant it with your Oregon Grape and salal. If you are looking for a good ground cover that is low growing, then Artocstaphyslos uva ursi (kinnickinick) is a good choice if they won't get stepped on. If the area will be walked on frequently, then something like creeping thyme (non-native) might be a could choice since it can take a lot of foot traffic.
