Iris bulbs

Asked February 2, 2013, 3:19 PM EST

We haven't put new iris bulbs in the ground yet; it's February 2. What will happen? What can we do to ensure that they will be okay? We live in unincorporated Oregon City (Clackamas County).

Thank you for your question to Ask the Expert.

If you are transplanting potted iris plants, you could definitely plant in the early spring.

Iris bulbs are typically divided and replanted in the mid-summer (after blooming).

If you plan to plant bulbs at this time, you will likely get a small bloom this season and it will be better in 2014 since the roots will have time to grow and create energy reserves for the blooming process. Follow the planting and care instructions found here: http://www.extension.umn.edu/distribution/horticulture/M1267.html
