Cow Pox

Asked January 31, 2013, 3:51 PM EST

We had a client call that is sure her sister's family milk cow has cow pox. Her sister developed a rash on her hands that went away when she used gloves during milking. Is this transferable to humans and would it transfer through the milk the family has been drinking. Everyone seems to be under the weather. Not being treated by a veterinarian at this time, but has a call into their vet's office. Please let me know what to tell them.

The best way to handle this situation is to have a veterinarian evaluate the cow and have a physician examination for the family members
