feeding surplus sub buns to milk goats

Asked January 29, 2013, 11:57 AM EST

A certain sub sandwich chain store is providing me with their (not that) stale buns that they would normally discard, actually an amazing amount of food to waste. I have for years fed these buns to my Nubian goats as a treat, but I find that my hay consumption is way down. How harmful is this practice?

Half the buns are whole wheat, the other half white. Are the goats being shorted in protein as they choose the carbs?

Depending on the amount of the buns that you are feeding they could be shorted some on protein, but it depends on the amount of protein in your hay and grain. I would reccommend just keeping an eye on the does and if you see a drop in milk production or animals getting overly fat you may want to cut back on the number of sub buns. Otherwise enjoy the free feed.
