Columbines and fertilizer

Do you fertilize all year or just in the blooming season? Which fertilizer is best?I am in the Houston,Tx area and want the flowers to acclimate here.

I am not able to answer this question for some reason in the normal format of this program. I apologize for not seeing it and for the wait. I try to handle these questions within 48 hrs.

Fertilizer should be used according to a soil test. TAMU soil testing lab information can be found at http://soiltesting.tamu.edu
Normally, we wait for the soil to warm up in March/April before applying some fertilizer to ornamentals and turf. Blooming plants will need phosphorus, but caution should be taken as phosphorus does not move much in the soil and over time it can build up and become rock phosphate which to plants is in an unavailable form.
