Blackberry Invasion

Asked January 13, 2013, 1:18 PM EST

I purchased a home with greenhouses. Unoccupied for 1.5 years, blackberry plants are taking over. How can I remove them without herbicides?

Manual removal is the quickest but they will keep coming back. Sometimes pruning them in August as the energy is being stored in the roots, will weaken then enough to kill them. . If fenced, goats will help keep them down.

Each spring there will usually be a regrowth.

Once the blackberries are down, a good lawn mower will help greatly to keep the blackberries from growing very high. This will stress them and often they will die, but can take up to two years.
