first time garden

Asked January 5, 2013, 2:43 PM EST

We are going to try planting vegetables. We will put a 2x8 box on the south side. should be about 8 hrs sun. We have no idea about companion plants or when to plant, or pesticides. We would like to have tomatoes, cucumbers, bell peppers, onions, peas, carrots. I know there has to be spacing, so not sure how many would fit. Would you be able to email us a planting diagram with planting dates?

Thank you for your question to Ask the Expert.

Your location sounds like it will work and raised bed boxes a great way to start vegetable gardening. How are you filling the beds? If you use a mix from a local landscape supply company, you probably will not need to add additional compost or fertilizer. For spacing, consider putting the taller plants toward the north side of the bed such that they will not block the sun for the other plants.

You can find information on spacing, timing for planting, and much more in OSU's publication Growing Your Own: http://ir.library.oregonstate.edu/xmlui/handle/1957/21092

Good luck! Your planning this winter will pay off when it comes time to start growing in the spring.
