winter watering containers outside now

Asked December 14, 2012, 12:13 PM EST

Due to extra dry conditions should one water containerized perennials outside in large
asian ceramic pots ?
How often ,how much and when ?
In past years I have stopped watering by this time and all has been well but things seem so very dry at the moment .

Yes
Every 1-2 weeks during extended dry warm snowless periods Nov-Apr
About 1 gallon for every 12" diameter of the pot.
In morning of what promises to be a warm dry day.

It would help to place a 1-2" layer of mulch (wood chips, straw or similar organic material) on top of the soil in the pot. This mulch will help keep soil moist longer. Remove most or all mulch by early April. See also: http://www.ext.colostate.edu/pubs/garden/07211.html
