The liver breaks down different parts of foods to fuel our bodies. Having a healthy liver helps you to feel better and maintain your health. Eating vegetables and fruits which have lots of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants help to prevent many health problems. Eating a healthy diet with vegetables, fruits, whole grains, fat-free or low-fat dairy and lean proteins (such as following My Plate found at http://myplate.gov ) provides the liver and the body with the nutrients it needs. Keeping your sodium intake low can help, so don’t add salt to your food and avoid processed foods that are high in sodium. Check the food nutrition label for sodium content. If the person is overweight losing weight will help the liver. It is preferred that a person lose at the rate of one to two pounds per week, more than that can stress the liver. Avoiding alcoholic beverages is important for a healthy liver as it is the liver that breaks down the alcohol. Managing diabetes or other health problems is important to help the liver and other organs of the body to function properly. Regular exercise has been shown to provide benefits to maintain health. The person should check with their doctor for more specific information or if they have specific concerns.
