Cherry tree insects #939383

Asked July 15, 2026, 1:54 PM EDT

My black cherry tree is dropping leaves across the whole tree. There is a small black bug on the underside of the leaves. What is it and what can I do?

Expert Response

This is cherry lace bug, an insect with a piercing sucking mouthpart that can cause damage to the leaves. If you are looking to manage with insecticides, see the link for a list of approved active ingredients.

In severe cases, early leaf drop could happen. Cherry lace bug by itself would not kill a tree. If you attach other photos of the tree, I can determine if there might be a separate issue contributing to the leaf drop.
