Burning Bush Bugs #934009

Asked June 03, 2026, 10:39 AM EDT

I found areas of bugs on the leaves of my burning bushes. I am wondering if there is anything I should do or if it is harmless. There is white stuff on the leaves, and black spots on the underside of the leaves and the stems. I hope the pictures help. Thank you!

Expert Response

Your plant has an aphid outbreak, which is responsible for causing sticky leaves, miscoloration, and leaf curling. The good news is that these will not kill a plant outright. You have 3 options:
1) Leave it alone and accept there will be some moderate to minor damage. Beneficial insects will kill some of the aphids
2) Hose off the area with a jet of water to knock the insects off. You may need to do this a few times over the coming weeks
3) Use insecticidal soap or neem oil on the leaves to kill the aphids. Read the label before applying to follow instructions and determine if there is a maximum temperature at which these can be safely applied.

Be cautious using broad-spectrum insecticides such as pyrethroids, as this may also kill beneficial insects.
