Leaning Tree/Bushes #934008

Asked June 03, 2026, 10:34 AM EDT

I removed a large pine tree and now trying to get the plants that had to lean away to become more upright. Any suggestions? See attached pdf. THANK YOU!

Hi, Marjorie -

The shrubs in your photos do appear to be azaleas. As far as I can tell, the bushes seem healthy.

As you noted, the pine tree was shading the azaleas. The removal of the pine tree and the resulting increase in sun and wind exposure will cause some stress to the plants. Therefore, I would not recommend adding to the stress by trying to straighten or otherwise shape them this year. With more even exposure to sun, the plants should put out vigorous new growth that will lead to a desirable form in a year or two. In general, azaleas do not need a lot of shaping or pruning: https://extension.unh.edu/sites/default/files/migrated_unmanaged_files/Resource000592_Rep614.pdf.

My recommendations this growing season would be:

* Prune out any dead branches, especially on the sides that were shaded

* Fertilize lightly with fertilizer specially formulated for acid-loving plants. A soil test is recommended (see https://extension.unh.edu/resource/best-practices-submitting-your-soil-sample). However, a fertilizer analysis similar to 6-10-4 applied at 2 pounds per 100 square feet to the soil surface is usually adequate. Cottonseed meal is also a good fertilizer. https://extension.missouri.edu/publications/g6825

* Add mulch to protect the shallow roots. Coarse materials such as partly decomposed oak leaves or pine needles are ideal. Oak shavings, hardwood chips or aged sawdust and sphagnum peatmoss may also be used satisfactorily. Use a mulch of sawdust or hardwood chips about 2 inches deep. A mulch of oak leaves should be 4 to 6 inches deep. https://extension.missouri.edu/publications/g6825

You may also want to plan to provide some extra protection from winter winds.
