The absolute best hardy, drought-resistant grass seed for this area is Turf-Type Tall Fescue. Varieties with the TWCA (Turfgrass Water Conservation Alliance) certification are proven to save water. You can find regional mixes at local outlets like Grange Co-op or Wilco Farm Store.
Why Turf-Type Tall Fescue? Deep Roots: Tall Fescue grows roots that are deep, which allows it to pull water from much deeper in the soil than other cool-season grasses. Heat Tolerance: It thrives in the hot, dry summers in our area. It handles heavy foot traffic well and recovers quickly from summer wear.
The optimal time to seed a lawn in our area is between Sept. 1st and Oct. 15; but second best is between April 15th and June 15th.
