Bulbs to be planted #922589

Asked December 02, 2025, 8:58 AM EST

I ran out of time planting my bulbs. Is there something I can do so that I don’t lose them? I still have some wonderful snowdrops, daffodils and fall crocuses.

Expert Response

Hello,

It seems that winter has crept up on us quickly this year. If properly stored, the bulbs should survive for a year and be ready for you to plant next fall.

The bulbs must be kept dry but allowed to breathe. If they don’t breathe, they will become soft and die.

Remove them from plastic bags or containers. Dispose of any bulbs that are soft. Store them in one layer in a cardboard box, ensuring that they do not touch each other. Separate each layer with newsprint. Choose a cool, dark, dry location such as a basement if it is not damp or a garage.

Assess them once a month. Roll them and dispose of any that have become soft. In the fall you can plant the healthy bulbs.
