Expert Response

There are instances, such as seasonal needle drop, where normal browning occurs.  However, this occurs further back on the branch. See Why Are My Pine Needles Turning Brown.  You Tube - Get Growing with Gary Heilig, Oct. 11, 2024.
However, your photo seems to show that needles on the ends of branches are turning brown.  You can investigate the various causes of such browning by accessing this website:

However, a certified arborist should be able to tell you what exactly is happening to your trees.  One can be found locally for you by going to the website TreesAreGood.org. That individual should, for a fee, be able to tell you what exactly is happening to your tree.
I would also suggest an arborist to identify the prognosis for your  grandson's maple tree as well.
