Boulevard Tree St. Paul #921785

Asked November 11, 2025, 9:02 AM EST

I have recently planted a boulevard tree in front of my house in St. Paul. It is a Redmond Linden about 2 1/2 inch diameter. I have a water bag and corrugated plastic surrounding the trunk. How long should I continue to fill the water bag? How is the best way to tell if the sound is frozen? Leaves have just turned color in the last few days.

Expert Response

Thanks for the good questions. Watering trees until the ground is frozen is very beneficial for all trees but especially for newly planted trees. Keep filling the bag, even after the leaves are gone, as long as the water soaks in to the ground. Obviously, if a 'puddle' of ice around the bag or if the bag freezes, it will be a good stopping point -no harm done. Then next April remove the plastic tube to prevent fungal/mold growth on the trunk.
