Grasses for beauty and blocking sight #916239

Asked September 02, 2025, 4:05 PM EDT

Is a Blackhawk or Shenandoah grasses good with a clay soil base? I'm looking at planting in a shaded area with average to dry soil. I can water as needed.

Expert Response

Thank you for reaching out.

I found the following information for you.

Blackhawks bluestem grass thrives in poor soil including clay, sand, or dry conditions. The tall grass grows quickly in rich soil but is likely to weaken and fall over as it gets taller. Full sunlight is best for growing Blackhawks, although it will tolerate light shade. This ornamental grass is drought-tolerant once established, but appreciates occasional irrigation during hot, dry weather. Good for zones 3 and is considered a native to Minnesota.

Fast growing 'Shenandoah' Red Switchgrass is one of the all-time favorite ornamental grasses. This native hybrid grass can be grown as a mass planting or dotted throughout the garden or foundation bed for texture and movement. Panicum grows best in full sun, and can tolerate poor soils.  This is good for zones 4-8.

I personally think you’ll have more consistent luck with the Blackhawk.  I’ve struggled with panicum and I live in southern MN.

Good luck.
