Newly retired Navy, Raising Cattle in Washington County. #914027

Asked August 14, 2025, 1:44 PM EDT

I'm looking at the patties for my Dexter cattle and see limited breakdown and no dung beetles. It seems that the bull headed dung beetle in endemic to MD. The farm has been used for hay/alfalfa farming for years. I looked at buying dung beetles but most options are from outside the US. Is there an entomology center in MD I could hook up with to start cultivating Local dung beetles, or purchase local fauna (if beetles are considered fauna.)

We do not know of any places that are rearing dung beetles, but we would recommend reaching out to the University of Maryland, Department of Entomology to see if they know of anyone who could help.
